Santi: Hello, my name is Santi.

Lia: And I'm Lia.

Santi: We're both from Indonesia. And today's question that I'd like to ask you is ... Is it common to have a house keeper in Indonesia?

Lia: Yes, it is common to have a housekeeper in Indonesia because, especially, in big cities like Jakarta when both parents are working so they need someone to take care of the household chores. They need someone to take care of the children to prepare them a meal, or to help them actually so it is common.

Santi: Yes, and it's convenient, really convenient because they can do all the cooking, all the cleaning and all we have to do is ask them politely.

Lia: Yes, that's very important.

Lia: Hi, this is Lia from Indonesia.

Santi: And this is Santi. The same, from Indonesia.

Lia: We are both sisters. So, my question for you is ... Is it common for a man to cook in your country?

Santi: Well, I will answer from my family perspective. No, it's not common in our family to have a man cook in our kitchen cause it will cause a mess and well, especially, my father he loves to cook, he wants to cook but our mother says no directly because when he cooks when he prepares all of the things he tends to make the kitchen dirty and we have to clean it later on so no.

Lia: So that's the point of your family. What about in our country?

Santi: I think maybe younger people, younger families use to do it but for the older couples, I think no. Right?

Lia: Yes, that's right.

Tom: Hi, my name's Tom.

Jess: And I'm Jess. We're from the UK.

Tom: The environment is a big issue at the moment. Jess, do you have any advice how to help the environment?

Jess: Yeah, I think it's really important to remember to turn things off, so when you're brushing your teeth, there's not need to keep the tap running all the time, and remember to turn off lights and air-conditioning units when you leave the room. How about you, Tom, any advice?

Tom: Well, that's good to know, I think new technology is helping people to protect the environment more and more. For examples, computers mean that we use less paper, and there are all kinds of things coming off the market that stop us from using quite so many resources.

Jess: Absolutely.

Mike: Hi, I'm Mike from Singapore and this is ....

MJ: MJ from Korea.

Mike: OK, MJ, let's talk about mistakes. Should teachers correct students grammar mistakes?

MJ: Yes, I think so, cause as a foreigner my English grammar is not perfect and I got a lot of corrections from American or Western teachers that I now can write a pretty good English essay.

Mike: Really.

MJ: What do you think Mike?

Mike: I think, well if it's English class, probably yes, because we have to learn to write better, but if it is ... let's say for example, in our school, if it's class or international relations, then probably not that important. The reason is because ... well the teacher wouldn't want to do it anyway. Imagine, right, you have a hundred papers. Not only you want to mark about ... give them points on the topic and, you know, any good points that are brought up in the report. And now you have to do grammar mistakes marking for them as well. It's too much work.

MJ: Too much work.

Mike: Right. It depends on what class you're in.

MJ: Yeah, I think so.

George: Hello, I'm George from Hawaii.

Crystal: And I'm Crystal from America.

George: And today's question is: would you rather be a student or a teacher? So Crystal?

Crystal: George?

George: Crystal, would you rather be a student or a teacher?

Crystal: I would rather be a student rather than a teacher.

George: Why?

Crystal: Because I think being a student is more fun rather than being a teacher such as ... examples as in classes if you're a student you can have the right to go to class or skip but if you're a teacher you have the responsibility to teach so you have to go to class.

George: OK, that makes sense.

Crystal: What about you George?

George: Well, I've done some teaching, yeah.

Crystal: Oh, yeah.

George: It is stressful, yeah. Being in charge of students knowledge and what not. It's way too stressful and way too much pressure. Way too much pressure. I can't handle that.

Crystal: But then sometimes I would like to be in charge.

George: Oh, that would be pretty sweet, yeah!

Crystal: I always wanted to throw those little chalks at their heads. Ugh!

George: Can you do that?

Crystal: I don't know. You can ....

George: I don't have chalk in my classroom. It's all markers. Next time I'm gonna try to throw a marker.

Crystal: Ah, I like that.

How is the traffic where you live?

Tom: Jess, we both live in Bangkok.

Jess: Yep.

Tom: We travel around every day. How do you find the traffic here?

Jess: It's pretty awful. Yeah, I think especially on Friday afternoons and at rush hour every day, you can't really take a taxi or travel by car because you can't get anywhere.

Tom: What kind of options are there for traveling around?

Jess: There's motorcycle taxis which I won't take because I think they're too dangerous.

Tom: What do you take?

Jess: I take motorbikes a lot, but I like the choice that we have in Bangkok. There are motorbikes. There's also tuk-tuks, which are kind of three-wheeled cars. There's the skytrain and the subway and taxis and private cars and a whole range of buses. Do you ever take the bus?

Tom: No, I don't take the bus here. I think if I'm going to be stuck in traffic, I'd like to be in an air-conditioned taxi, not in a hot, sweaty bus.

Todd: So Megen, we are both teachers, English teachers in Japan, and we both come from countries that Christmas, but Christmas is so different in Japan than in our home countries, so I though we would talk about that.

Megen: Yeah, absolutely. It's particularly different to Australia because we have ... we have it in summer.

Todd: Oh, that's right. So it's a beautiful summer holiday, right?

Megen: It is, though when it get hotter here in Japan, I start to feel that it's getting into Christmas season.

Todd: Oh, right! So summer is Christmas.

Megen: Yes, yeah.

Todd: That's so cool. Do you still do the Christmas tree and the gifts under the tree?

Megen: We do and we have a lot of the same Christmas traditions, but the food is pretty different. We eat a lot of fresh fruits, and we have like fresh prawns. I guess you might call them shrimps.

Todd: Right, no we call them prawns too. Prawns or shrimp. Wow! That's interesting. You know, it's cool that you brought up food because we're both in Japan and I think it's very interesting that in Japan the Christmas dinner is fried chicken.

Megen: Yeah! I can't imagine eating KFC or any kind of chicken for Christmas.

Todd: Now did you know about this before you came to Japan?

Megen: I didn't actually. I was shocked when I heard about it.

Todd: Yeah, I didn't believe it at first, and then when I came to Japan, I saw the long lines outside KFC, and I thought, wow, this really is a thing. And now in Japan, not only do they have KFC chicken, but everywhere. So the supermarkets make fried chicken. The convenience stores have fried chicken. Other hamburger stores have fried chicken, all just for Christmas.

Megen: Yeah, yes, I don't think we usually eat chicken. Maybe some families would eat roast chicken, but usually we eat cold meats.

Todd: Oh, right, so Australia is fresh fruit, shrimp, and cold meats.

Megen: Yeah, we have a few Australian desserts that I haven't seen in any other coutries, but I think in Australia there's a lot of variety though, so my family in particular, that's what we eat, but I think every family is different. How about in America?

Todd: Ah, in America it's very close to Thanksgiving, so usually you have a big bird, so you have turkey or chicken or ham. Ham is a big one. So you might have baked ham. But you have lots of sweets, lots of cakes, Christmas cakes, pies, cookies. Things like that. So everybody gains a lot of weight. Do you eat a lot of sweets for Christmas in Australia?

Megen: Well, I imagine they eat more baked goods in America, but we eat a lot of cold, like parfait, kind of desserts. With a mix of like sponge cake and jelly and cream, and we do eat cookies and different like chocolate sweets, and yeah, I think we do some baking but, yeah, not so much pies.

Todd: So in Australia because it's so warm, do you spend the day at the beach?

Megen: We do! Yeah, a lot of people have pools. Their own pools, so they will go swimming in their backyard, or they'll go to the beach, or play cricket outside.

Todd: That's great! So do you barbecue? Is Barbecue a common way?

Megen: Yeah! Especially for Christmas. It's really great to be outside. And there are barbecues you can use near the beach or in the parks, so a lot of people go outside and mingle with the locals. It's great.

Todd: Oh, that's fantastic. So in the Northern Hemisphere, Christmas is often associated with snow, so you have the snowman and things like that. Do you have those types of decorations in Australia?

Megen: We do! Although we don't have any snow, we still have the snow decoration. And usually Santa Claus still wears the long sleeve winter clothing, although we do have our own version of Santa Claus, that wears singlets and shorts.

Todd: That's nice. So you've lived in a country with a warm Christmas, and a country with a cold Christmas. Which do you prefer?

Megen: Well, I think because I've spend so many Christmases in Australia, that I still feel like it's Christmas when it gets warmer, and when I see things like peaches and watermelon in season I want to celebrate Christmas.

Todd: That's so cool.

Megen: Do you want to experience a Christmas in Australia?

Todd: I do. I do! That is definitely on my bucket list now, to have a warm weather Christmas.

Megen: It would be so strange for you!

Katya: Hello, I'm Katya from Bulgaria.

Ayumi: I'm Ayumi from Brazil.

Katya: And today's question is do you remember any school trips? Do you remember any?

Ayumi: I don't know but somehow I always go to the schools that have a lot of school trips, a lot. But one of the most remarkable ones was when I was in Brazil, I went to St Nicholas School and we had this weird trip called Lifeskill Trip so we have to learn how to survive in a desert island. It was really funny because we were taken to this strange island where nobody lived, a desert island. There were no toilets, there were no showers. It was summertime and we have to spend three nights there.

Katya: Oh my God.

Ayumi: The first day I remember that I slept on the boat. Everybody slept on the boat but one single small boat, it's not like a cruiser or something, it was an open air boat and I was sleeping next to the Principal that was really kind of weird experience.

Katya: I used to go every year to school trips. Wherever there was a school trip from my high school or elementary school, I was always the first one to sign up because I really like traveling. I'm never going to forget I went to Europe twice where I can see Italy and Switzerland and France. I went to France twice. I was sixteen years old so for me I was very happy because it was very cheap. It was made for students and I had a similar life survival skills experience when I went to Ukraine and there is a school camp. It's called Artec. It's international and we had to wake up at seven in the morning and have exercise and then we had to make our pillows be triangular. It was a bit Soviet Union leftover camping so they really learn you survival skills.

Ayumi: Wow.

Tlotlo: Hi, my name is Tlotlo and I am from Botswana.

Resse: And my name is Resse from Botswana as well.

Tlotlo: And our question is are you a good dancer?

Resse: I'm definitely not.

Tlotlo: I would agree with you. But I on the other hand are a very good dancer if I may say so myself, don't you think?

Resse: I don't know. I don't want to boost your ego.

Tlotlo: But you know it is true, I'm a very good dancer. Dancing is all about listening to the rhythm of the music and going with the flow. That's all there is to it, it's nothing hard as he makes it seem to be.

Resse: I think it's easier said than done.

Tlotlo: No, no you just have to listen and move, let your body glide.

Resse: It's not so easy to move to anything, believe me I've tried and looked like a clown basically.

Tlotlo: Well I'd agree with that as well. I guess he has to learn a few tips from me then.

Resse: Yeah, if you give me dancing lessons.

Tlotlo: But it's gonna cost you.

Phuong: Hello everybody, I'm Phuong from Vietnam.

JM: And I'm JM from the Philippines.

Phuong: And today's question is when do you like to dress up? How about you first JM?

JM: Well I don't really like to dress up in general, I just wear what I'm wearing right now, tee shirt shorts and sneakers but of course on special occasions like, say, a friend's wedding or maybe like an interview or something like that or for a date, then yes I would need to dress up. How about you?

Phuong: Sure for a date you need to dress up.

JM: Yes, definitely.

JM:对,没错。

Phuong: For me though I think girls like to dress up every day because they want to be beautiful in the eyes of the others. For me, I don't think that it is dress up but for anything like some ocasion like proms, parties and some special occasion as well, yeah a date of course, and some occasion like weddings and some ceremony, I think it is a good time to dress up to make yourself beautiful and also it is a way to respect the opposite people so I think...

JM: Yes, that's right.

JM:对,没错。

Phuong: Yes, sure. OK.

JM: All right, bye bye.

JM:好,邂逅。

Phuong: Bye.
